Hi, I am searching for family of my Great Grandpa Edward P. Davis Chippewa nation, I found his sister Margaret died at the school at age 16, I am trying to find out if she is among the students buried at the School. I can not find his Brother Joe either. My GG Grandmother Nancy I believe died in 1880 and my GG Grandfather Samuel might have remarried I have pictures of who I believe to be his sister in later years. They lived in Isabella, Michigan on reservation. Is there a way to find out their Indian names? Any help would be wonderful... Thank you in advance. I am hoping I have some relatives out there and hopefully some info... Theresa

Can I rightly assume that the ggrandparents were the parents of your gr. grandpa, or of your gr. grandma? I will see what I can find. please post whatever additional info you have on them,s it may help with my search.

t: thank you for the additional information. you have a heritage you can be proud of. as for the records, it is difficult if not impossible, to find records prior to 1885, but there are records. I spent yesterday looking for the records re. the burials at the School cemetery. Now I can widen m,y search to see what else I can find for you. Cross your fingers. ________________________________________ Theresa below are links to Isabella Saginaw Chippewa of which your ancestors were members. I am puzzled at not being able to find anything on your gggrandpa and family at ancestry.com I did find an 1880 US Census for Isabella County,Michigan and found them listed: Samuel age 35 b. Mi parents b. Mich. Occup. farmer nancy age son32 wife Iva age Age 11 margarett age 5 yrs Edwar age 3 on the same census, I found 2 orphans: margarite and Edward davis. www.mifamilyhistory.org/isabella/1880isabella.htm___________________________ I don't know whow they were related to Samuel but I found other s with Davis surname in that county in the burial records: Levii davis and wufe Josephine Davis, Henry Davis,P. Homer and wife magdalen,

I would also suggest that you contact the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal office. Just google the name of the tribe to get the website for the contact info. Remember do not call them, write a letter telling who you are, how you are related to the people you seek information on, and what information you need. also contact NARA for possible heirship report on your gggrandpa. give his English name, tribal affiliation, and what reservation he lived on. if they have info they will tell you what they have, and how much it will cost.yYou can charge it to your credit card to get faster resu;llts. the contact is maryfrances.ronan@nara.gov

Theresa:I FOUND A BETTER COPY OF THE 1880us CENSUS FOR ISABELLA, mICH. iVE IS ACTUALLY THE BROTHER jOE DAVIS. I CHECKED THE OTHER Indian SCHOOLS AND COULD NOT FIND JOE AT ANY OF THEM.
I also could not find any Indian names for any of your ancesttors. I suspect that Samuel may have been baptized Christian as a baby or young child, and that he had his chil;den baptized as well. I am sorry I do not have access to church records for Isabella,to do a search for them. if they were baptized Catholic, then you would need to google native indian churches, Isabella,Michigan ands ee what you come up wit.

Thank you so much for the info I will do as you suggested I might have a few more questions about all I need to do. You found a bit more than I did Thank you. I did see that Edward and Margaret were living with a Samuel Dagg when they were young. Have a great weekend. I might be the only off spring seeing how 2 generations were only children, Margaret died young and no info on Joe. Was really hoping to find some cousins...Theresa

Theresa I haven't given up[ the search. When I do a search, I am like a flea on a dog, it won't let go. hahaha I think the problem is in knowing which of the BIA Agencies the census reports for Isabella Chippewa were under, so Ancestry can find the records. Theresa I don't know if your dad is still alive ,but I found an Edward Davis in his 20, living in the household of Frank Franciscus(sp.).occupation; Servant. if your dear dad is still living ask if he ever was a servant for this family. I also found a Tonkin Samuel Davis, born Mar.8,1888 in Michigan, who registered for the draft for WWI from Powhaton(sp),VA. did your parents live in Isabella,or elsewhere? This will help me to reack him back.

Theresa: let us know if you have any questions and/or need more help. I checked out Alma's records, and couldn't find anything on your gr. grandpa. Theresa, have you considered placing an ad in the Isabella newspaper re.your ancestors with request for information on them, and possible other living descendents? Don't include the mailing address, just your email address in the ad. you have a beautiful avatar.
