Oneida Boarding School. Died in 1916.
Alexander, Carrie: Winnebago (NB)
October 1883-October 1884. Carrie left HI due to failing
health and died in February 1885.
Allen, Ada: Tribe unknown (OK)
Arrived in August 1911, but did not enter HI. Twenty-seven
year old Ada remained one night and left for Carlisle in the
morning. Never enrolled at HI.
All Yellow, Jane (Eagle Face): Sioux (Standing Rock, ND)
[M. James All Yellow (HI Couple)].
Came to HI with her husband in October 1887 and stayed until
September 1888. Housekeeper. Died in 1890.
American Horse, Vina: Sioux (Pine Ridge, SD) [M. G.A. Newton;
M. Joseph C. Pereau]. (file missing)
October 1901-September 1905. Vina spent two years in
Waterbury, Connecticut, studying to be a nurse. She
returned home when stricken with appendicitis.
Ampetu, Jennie (Umbatuyah): Assinboin (Fort Belknap, MT)
October 1887-1888. "Poor character in every way. Eccentric
in dress and manners." Dismissed in 1888.
Anderson, Carrie: Sioux (Yankton, SD) [Mrs. Gilbert San Pierre].
November 1878-September 1881. Carrie later attended a
government school at Genoa, NB. Housekeeper, husband a good
farmer. Died in March 1909.
Anderson, Millie (Stakakaa=Lady in Field): Arikara
(Fort Berthold Agency, ND) (file missing)
May 1909-1911. Nurse. Studied nursing at the Evangelical
Hospital and Deaconess Home in Bismarck, North Dakota.
Antone, Mary: Oneida (WI) (file missing)
November 1888-March 1892. Mary later influenced "quite a
large number of young people ... to come to Hampton."
Archiquette, Irene: Oneida (WI) [M. Wilson Skenandore (HI)].
September 1898-June 1901. After leaving HI Irene completed
the Domestic Science course at Haskell Institute in 1903.
Irene remained at Haskell Institute in 1904 and 1905 to
teach Domestic Arts. Irene also worked as a seamstress.
Died June 1908.

Banks. Reported "wreck upon arrival." Died June 23, 1886
at HI from scrofula. Buried in the school cemetery.

Missionary and camp school teacher. Died in 1891.
Begs-For-Her, Nancy: Sioux (Crow Creek, SD)
June 1884-October 1884. Left due to illness. Nancy was
thirty years old. "Married illegally more than once."
Behedo, Josephine: Apache [M. Casper Cailis].
Arrived in June 1894 from Mt. Vernon, Alabama. Left HI in
November 1896. Housekeeper. Died in December 1916.
*Bender, Annie: Chippewa (White Earth, MN) [M. Reuben Sanders].
Arrived at HI in October 1902 and graduated in 1906. Clerk.
Annie continued her education and completed the commercial
course at Haskell Institute in 1908. Clerk at Chemawa
School. Died September 29, 1911.

[M. Henry Roe Cloud].
Arrived at HI from White Earth, Minnesota, in September
1903. Elizabeth graduated from HI in 1907 but remained at
the school to enter the post-graduate course in Domestic
Science in 1908. Teacher in the United States Indian
Service until entering a nursing school in Philadelphia.
Elizabeth returned to HI 1914-1915 to enter a special course
in Home Economics. Elizabeth left HI to teach at Carlisle
Indian School in 1915. The Roe Clouds established the
American Indian Institute in Wichita, KS. School matron and
Sunday school teacher employed by the Presbyterian Board.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her as a delegate
to the 1940 White House Conference on Children and Youth.
In 1950 Elizabeth was chosen Mother of the Year. Died on
September 16, 1965.
Bender, Emma: Chippewa (White Earth, MN) [M. Paul Kelly;

November 1907-1912. Emma became a trained nurse and worked
in a sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Big Goose, Genevieve: Ponca (Ponca Agency, OK)

F.E. Ferrell, Superintendent of the Ponca Agency, wrote HI
in May 1912 praising Genevieve for "nursing a young woman
who died from tuberculosis." Ida Burning, a returned HI
pupil, reported that Genevieve "married a colored boy.
Heard he was a Hampton student."

September 14, 1921-October 19, 1921. Found to be pregnant
upon her arrival at Hampton. Caroline Andrus sent her to
the Ingleside Home in Buffalo, NY.

April 1884 until her death at HI on December 23, 1884.
Cause of death listed as consumption, reported to be
"diseased upon arrival." Buried in the school cemetery.

April 1884-July 1885. Lucy left HI due to an illness. She
continued her education at Crow Creek and Grant's Institute,

September 1883-October 1884. Rosa returned home due to
failing health and died at home in 1885.

April 1884 until her death at the school on March 20, 1885.

Dixie Hospital. Became a nurse and worked at the Oakmont

October 1901-June 1906. Minnie graduated from Chilocco in

November 1888-July 1891. Dressmaker, nurse, and teacher
in a Pine Ridge camp school.

to enter Dixie Hospital's nursing program. Emma pursued

nursing school in New Haven, CT. Nurse. In addition to
private nursing, Lavinia was also a nurse in the government
schools. She was Carlisle's nurse from 1915-1918.

Eight year old Anna arrived at HI with her mother, Mary
Dawson, in November 1878. Mary left Anna in HI's care when
she left the school in October 1879. After her graduation
in 1885 Anna remained at HI until 1887 to teach and finish her
post-graduate studies. Anna left HI to enter a Normal

November 1878-October 1879. Mary came to HI with her
young daughter, Anna Dawson. During her stay at HI Mary
served as the interpreter for new arrivals. Died March 11,
1880.
*Decora, Angel (Hi-nook-mahiwi-kilinaka=Thunderbird Woman):
Winnebago (NB) [M. William Henry Dietz].
November 1883-June 1887; October 1888 until graduating in
1891. Angel continued her studies at a school in
Northampton, MA. In 1896, Angel graduated from Smith
College with a degree in art. She continued her artistic
pursuits at Drexel Institute, where she studied under Howard
Pyle. Angel later entered the Cowles Art School in
Boston, MA. Angel opened an art studio and worked in Boston
and New York as an illustrator. In 1906 Angel accepted the
offer of Francis E. Leupp, Commissioner of Indian Affairs,
to foster the study and development of the Indian arts at
Carlisle Indian School. She remained at Carlisle until
1915 and died February 7, 1919.
Decora, Grace: Winnebago (NB) [M. Whirling Thunder].
October 1883-June 1887. Married a non-progressive man and
preferred to wear "Indian dress." Died in 1898.

November 1891 until graduating in 1896. Julia remained at
HI for post-graduate studies and was awarded a Normal School
diploma in 1898. Field matron, seamstress, and matron at
the government hospital in Winnebago, NB.

(Friendship, WI) [M. Steven Kirkwood].
October 1905-December 1907; January 1908 until her
graduation in 1910. Emma was the Class of 1910
Salutatorian. Emma stayed at HI 1910-1911 for post-graduate
study. Domestic servant.

Waterbury, Connecticut, studying to be a nurse. She

Arrived at HI from White Earth, Minnesota, in September
1903. Elizabeth graduated from HI in 1907 but remained at

Service until entering a nursing school in Philadelphia.
Elizabeth returned to HI 1914-1915 to enter a special course
in Home Economics. Elizabeth left HI to teach at Carlisle
Indian School in 1915. The Roe Clouds established the
American Indian Institute in Wichita, KS. School matron and
Sunday school teacher employed by the Presbyterian Board.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her as a delegate
to the 1940 White House Conference on Children and Youth.
In 1950 Elizabeth was chosen Mother of the Year. Died on
September 16, 1965.

February 1895-April 1898. Sally was dismissed from HI when
it was learned that she became pregnant during her summer
outing in Massachusetts. "Excellent housekeeper & good
mother."
Cummings, Lucy Bell (Chkaweda=Youngest One): Pawnee (OK)
[M. W.K. Murray].
October 1902-May 1905. Assistant dining room matron at
Chilocco until enrolling at Carlisle in 1906. Housekeeper.
Currier, Madeline (Tawahintka): Sioux (Standing Rock, ND)
[M. Thomas Paseca Ashley (HI)].
August 1886-September 1889. "Did woman's work, deserted by
husband." Died 1902.

Davis, Ziewie (Ziwin=Yellow Woman): Sioux (Crow Creek, SD)
November 1878-September 1881. Clerk and bookkeeper in
her father's store. "Good influence on family." Died
in 1882.
*Dawson, Anna (Spahananadaka=Wild Rose): Arikara
(Fort Berthold, ND) [M. Byron Wilde].
Eight year old Anna arrived at HI with her mother, Mary
Dawson, in November 1878. Mary left Anna in HI's care when
she left the school in October 1879. After her graduation
in 1885 Anna remained at HI until 1887 to teach and finish her
post-graduate studies. Anna left HI to enter a Normal
School in Framingham, MA. Teacher, church worker, and Field
Matron at Fort Berthold Reservation, ND. Died June 6, 1968.
Dawson, Mary (Stashbadu=Chief Enemy Woman): Arikara
(Fort Berthold, ND)
November 1878-October 1879. Mary came to HI with her
young daughter, Anna Dawson. During her stay at HI Mary
served as the interpreter for new arrivals. Died March 11,
1880.
*Decora, Angel (Hi-nook-mahiwi-kilinaka=Thunderbird Woman):
Winnebago (NB) [M. William Henry Dietz].
November 1883-June 1887; October 1888 until graduating in
1891. Angel continued her studies at a school in
Northampton, MA. In 1896, Angel graduated from Smith
College with a degree in art. She continued her artistic
pursuits at Drexel Institute, where she studied under Howard
Pyle. Angel later entered the Cowles Art School in
Boston, MA. Angel opened an art studio and worked in Boston
and New York as an illustrator. In 1906 Angel accepted the
offer of Francis E. Leupp, Commissioner of Indian Affairs,
to foster the study and development of the Indian arts at
Carlisle Indian School. She remained at Carlisle until
1915 and died February 7, 1919.
Decora, Grace: Winnebago (NB) [M. Whirling Thunder].
October 1883-June 1887. Married a non-progressive man and
preferred to wear "Indian dress." Died in 1898.
*Decora, Julia (Haksuka): Winnebago (NB) [M. Marvin Lukehart].
November 1891 until graduating in 1896. Julia remained at
HI for post-graduate studies and was awarded a Normal School
diploma in 1898. Field matron, seamstress, and matron at
the government hospital in Winnebago, NB.
*Decorra, Emma [Hochapwiga=Pretty Gray]: Winnebago
(Friendship, WI) [M. Steven Kirkwood].
October 1905-December 1907; January 1908 until her
graduation in 1910. Emma was the Class of 1910
Salutatorian. Emma stayed at HI 1910-1911 for post-graduate
study. Domestic servant.
