Blue Cloud aka William Bean ,Sr. was born in 1833, the son of Major Jonathan Bean and Skuyewin, from the camp of Chief Hejata "Forked Horn' near Fort Lookout,SD. Skuyewin's parents Hoksina Waste 'PrettyBoy' and Oyate Nayagewinmaniwin "Walks visiting Woman. william was given the name Blue cloud that the Indians had given his father.
Sweet Woman's fther and her uncle forked Horn were the sons of Yankton Headman Cetanwayakapi 'The Hawk Sees Then.'
In 1835, Major Bean resigned his position as subagent and left Fort Lookout, and his Yankton Family. Young William was raised by Sweet woman's clan. After his grandfather died, his great uncle Hejata trained him in the traditions of the Sioux.
Williaaam Bean ,Sr. was baptized with other Yankton children in the summer of 1839 by Father Pierre Jean DeSmet.
it is believed tht William and his father may have been reunited when Jonathan Bean returned up the Missouri as an agent for the Oto, Missouri, Omaha, and Pawnee Indians and stayed at the new Council Bluffs Indian Agency ,, Belleview.
William may have gone back with his father to St. Louis in July of 1846. The yankton oral history tells of Blue Cloud living in St. Louis and attending a jesuit School there, which has been confirmedby a priest of the Order of St. Benedict.
William , shortly after 1850 asked and received his father's permission to return to his Yankton people. William ,with his uncles, Joseph and paul Picoteed traveled up and down the Missouri by steamboat to the American Fur Company posts. Joseph was then mrried to Sweet Woman's sister Hatawin, and Paul was the husband of Wincicana Wastewin "Good Girl'.
blue Cloud worked as a scout and guid e fort he Fort Randall post after it ws estblished in 1856, and he was part of the 1858 utah expedition.
In 1865, Blue cloud aka William Bean,Sr. married Louise thingyson, thedaughter of William thingyson and wikohdiwin 'Transparent Woman.' Louise's father was the son of robert thingyson a Scottish-Canadian Trader and his wife Totowin, 'Blue woman', the sister of Yanktoni chief Red thunder. His mother was the daughter of Yankton Chief Pteeyuteani "Don't Eat buffalo Meat'.
blue Cloud and Louise had three children: William Bean,Jr.born 1866, and .he married Fannie Rouse.; alma Bean(she was deaf) born q868, and married 1st to John Greycane, and 2nd to Joseph Fleury; and Susan Bean, born in 1872.
blue Cloud and Louise's marriage ended in a separation and he took another wife in 1876. her name was Mry Arem aka itewstewin 'Pretty Face Woman'. With his second wife they had 6 children, but four of them died young: emily, Louise, eunice , and Paul. Mary A. Bean survuving daughter aka Anpetuwastewin, 'Good Day woman', married born in 1879, married Willis Zephier. His las son, William G. Bean, born 1881, attended the Haskell Indian School.
In 1877, the hereditary chief of the Yanktons , felix Brunot, a cousin of Blue Cloud, left the Yankton reservtion to seek an education., and the government agents appointed Blue Cloud as chief in his place. this is very significant in that he was the youngest of the Yankton chiefs and the last in name, as the term "Chief" was ordered to no longer be used, in accordnance withthe Treaty of 1893.
At the age of eighty-one, Chief Blue cloud suffered a severe fall, which partially paralyzed him. He was cared for by his daughter Mary Picotte, and his wife Pretty Face Woman. he died four years later on September 27th, 1918..
In 1950, the monks of the Order of St. Benedictbegan construction of what is now called Blue Cloud Abbey near Milbank,SD out of regard for the Indian people it served through five missions, and in memory of chief Blue Cloud, Mahpiyato.
the biography apparently was prepared and submitted by Blue cloud's Great-Grandson prior to blue Cloud's induction into the south Dakota Hall of Fame in 1988.
