HISTORY OF MT AUBURN CEMETERY (written by Art & Madge Bidwell Leighton Madison, SD)
Through the Memory of Blanche Trottman, age 92, born Feb 22, 1893, died Feb 1985.
Her parents were George and Lena Lampson who came with their parents, William
and Harriet Lampson from Rockford, Ill. in 1880 to Dakota Territory. They
homesteaded in the northwest part of what is now known as Moody County. They
were accompanied by Hiram King and his daughter, Odessa, friends of the family,
in the summer of 1880. Hiram King became ill. He told the Lampsons that if he
should die they should dig a grave any place they wanted and "bury me". He did
pass away that same year so he was buried in the plot which was later known as
the Lampson Cemetery. It was given by William and Harriet Lampson in 1880.
Several deaths followed. Distant cousins of the Lampsons, known as Grandpa and
Grandma Davis are also buried there.
In 1890 they decided to call the burial ground a bonafide cemetery. An
association was formed and named Mt. Auburn Cemetery by Harriet Lampson. In
1890 Alex Stewart plotted and raised lots. The lots were sold for $1.00 each.
Several lots were sold. The cemetery has been well kept. Meetings are held
twice a year.
