Brad: Thomas Provencalle in his affidavit for the Lake Pepin Half Breed Land Scrips.NARA) did not give his mother's name, but said that she was a full blood Sioux he did name his father as Louis Provencal, a Frenchman. He stated that his wife's name was Frezin Pasi, and she was a white woman. their children at the time(1855-1857) were Pierre Age 11, Harriet Age 4, Archage(girl) age 2, and the infant named Elenor age 6 wks. They were living in Dacotah county Minnesota, at the time he made out this affidavit. Samuel Finley in his supporting affidavit, said that he did not know the name of Thomas's mother, but did hear from his step-mother, and knew her to be a full blood sioux, and that he had known the family for many years. He stated that he thought Thomas's wife was a half-blood white woman. check out www.census-finder.com and find the 1850 minnesota Territorial Census, for Dakotah county. the families of Louis and thomas should be listed. If itdidn't know better, I would have to guess that were more than one family of Provencal's that wound up in south dakota. some of them, came from Minnesota by way of Canada, others by way of Louisiana. so Louis provencal was married twice, to his first wife, then Thereseood sioux). NoteL i just corrected grammmatical and spelling errors.

where did you get the information on Joseph's wife being named nancy? See if you can find Joseph listed under laBlanc and also under Provencal in the Territorial Census I mentioned above. then check out the 1860 Minnesota Census at the same website.

I followed Joseph by using his Birthdate and childrens names, they all match up, how many Josephs have a father named Louise Carbeneau dit Provencall and Kids named Sara and Joseph Jr.. Josephs that were 1/2 mdewakanton and children that were 3/4 indian, with brothers and sisters named George and Thomas and the others i listed.. Joseph appears on the 1838 mix-blood census..Under the name Provencial, he dropped that name after comming to Sisseton, But i noticed a Joseph La Blanc on the list of.. Property of Condenmed Indians.. some where on this site i forgot.. its spelled Joseph LaBlac tho so i don't know about that one.. The name Nancy La Blanc comes from an interest in her allotment that my mother inherited. right Next to her husbands allotment Joseph Sr. There allotments surrounded a lake, they named it Sara Lake.. Probly after there Daughter?? and didn't Brown earth records say Sara died in the first year after being baptized??it would clear most of this up if we could see there probates.. Do you think Therese IS Muzanakawin? and who was Louise's wife before Therese

You should have also found Louis listed in that 1850 census. He was 86 yrs old and was living with Anglesia. all i know is that the tree at geneanet.org has Louis and wife therese? as the parents of Angelique .It also lists her siblings and their dates of birth, but does not sy who their mother was. I the tree also shows his father Pierre Carboneau married to a Chippewa Indian woman. to get the 1860 US Federal Census fMinnesota, type it into google and you should come up with one or more websites, where you may find it.

There was also a a Joseph Lablanc listed in the soc. sec. death Index, born 1891, died may 1983 at Sisseton, Roberts,SD. I doubt we will ever know who Louis Provencalle's first wife was. i doubt we will ever know who this nancy that mrried Joseph laBlanc Sr. was either.

Brad: I was able to find out that Louis Provencalle/lablanc's first wife was none other than a daughter of chief sleepy eyes. Louis is believed to have settled at Traverse des Sioux @1812. His oldest son was killed by Indians @1843 near the south Dakota line. His son George was killed in 1862 at the Battle of New Ulm. Anotherofhis sons died in 1844 and was buried with Louis's first wife in the Old French Cemetery at Traverse des Sioux. His trading post no longer exists, nor the townof Traverse des Sioux . the only thing remaining to indicte where the signing of the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux 1851 is a boulder and a plaque. The Old French Cemetery was bounded by a white picket fence, and the graves had black crosses with the names and dates printed on them. Oneof the commission who remembers the old cemetery, mentioned that it no longer exists, that it was invaded by grave robbers who stole the valuable s from the corpses buried there.

Hello- I am looking for relatives (mother and father, to begin with, of a Ella LaBlanc. Ella was born in Mendota, Minnesota around 1855. She married a Harry A. Level, and they were living in Kansas City from the 1880s, having a daughter, Marie, in 1888, til they relocated to Minneapolis, MN around 1904.
i know Thomas Provencalle / LaBlanc, son of Louise, was living there in the 1850s, but so far have not established a connection. Also, Thomas had a brother, Joseph, but I know even less about him.
Help!
Thanks, Jon Strand
