Hello: I think I posted this information before, but encase I didn't here it is: There is Rock Island (now a peninsula) in Devils Lake, ND. It was named for Augustin LaRocke, who had a fur post here. His Indian name was Wazusteca (Strawberry) because he had a red birth mark on his face. I understand that some of his local descendants carry this mark, but not on their face. The North Dakota National Guard now use the "island" as a training base called Camp Grafton having purchased it from the Spirit Lake Dakota circa 1900.

Yes, there are two LaRock families here at Spirit Lake. I don't know how they spell their name. Everyone here has cell phones so there isn't any listing in the phone book. I just called my wife who works at the Tribal building but she knows nothing about them. She thinks they came from Turtle Mountain Rez. Augustin LaRoc had his fur post on the island between the years 1819 and 1826. I have been following the postings on the other website. I assume this Augustin was a Junior. Toksta ake, Louie

james L. Hansen wrote an article in The Genealogist, vol.11, no1(Spring,1997) pp.3-36 titled The Origins of the Roc/Rocque Family of Prairie du Chien and Wabasha,Genealogy Among the Voyageurs. if you can locate a copy of it, it may provide information on the family that you seek.
