Hi gang,
I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that I purchased the very last copy of the book “The Tepee and the Church” from the Eastern Nebraska Genealogical Society. They tell me they are trying to get away from the book printing thing.
The good news- When I told them about my pals here who need church records so desperately, they offered to sign over copy rights to the book to me. YEA! They discussed the situation and decided that this would be a good home for it. I agree! So they are sending me the master and a copyright transfer, and I can do as I wish with the book. Well, of course, I am posting it here. What else would I do?
I will need to have some bound copies made for folks who contact the Genealogical Society, so if anyone would want a “real” book to refer to, you can let me know.
This book is a transcription of early records, mostly done by Fr. De Smet as he traveled up and down the Missouri River. Many of the baptisms were of French fur traders and Indian women, and occurred at the various forts along the river. You won’t find a lot of your Minnesota kin here, but you LaFramboise folks should be tickled pink. Lots and lots of them here! Other Priests who have entries here are Fr’s John Bernard, P.J. De Smet, C. Hoecken, O.S.B. Philip, C. Quickenborne and F.L. Verreydt.
I will do my best to scan and upload this, the print is very small and I am not sure how readable it will be, but I’ll try.
God bless Margie and Claire for giving us this gift!
Some of the names in this index were sponsors, rather than baptized.
Update- The entire book appears below, scanned larger for easier viewing-
