Terminology Used in This Project Sioux means "snake" or "snakelike enemy." It is a name the whites called them, and one which came from the Ojibwe, their traditional foe. Although Sioux is still in common usage, it is not a name the Dakota people use or recognize. Dakota means "friends" or "allies," and is the preferred name. The term "Dakota Sioux" is also incorrect. Further west, the name is Lakota or Nakota. Native American, Indian, and American Indian may also be used interchangeably. We have chosen to use Native American. The Dakota nation was made up of a number of subtribes, or bands. Those in Minnesota were the Mdewakanton, Wahpeton, Sisseton, and Wahpekute, also know as the Santee. link below- www.isd77.k12.mn.us/schools/dakota/conflict/history.htm
