I am starting this thread for our new member Betsy. she writes-
"Thank you!! I am looking into the relatives of Mary Taliaferro Woodbury, have been working out an extended family tree and find that much of the work is already here! Such a great resource.
I have also been trying to find out where she was between 1848 (when she married) and 1862 and then between 1862 and 1880s when I find her in Santee with her son's family. I heard that she and her husband lived in the South St. Paul area prior to 1860, but that is all I know.
Thank you thank you!!
Betsy"
Let's see what we can do to help her!

This is link to a description of Maj. Taliaferro's records on Microfilm and mentions that he sent his daughter to the School at Lake Harriet. Betsy look in the the Family trees section, you should find the fam. History chart by brill of mazaWasicum which includes lawrence Taliaferro and his daughter mary Taliaferro and her spouse Warren Woodbury. www.mnhs.org/library/findaids/m0035.pdfI found Mary living in St. paul from 1880- May 1,1885. One way you vcan track her is to check the Polk directories for St. Paul Minnesota.this directory gives their name, address, occupation and names of the others in the household. they are printed every year.I am not sure when the first Polk Directory was published for St. Paul. The Minn. His. Society would have them all. the other way you might track her is to track her children. We know that her hubby was killed in the Civil War. The Taliaferro papers are on mmicrofilm, and I know the USD Library at Vermillion has copies of the microfilm. You should log into the US library of Congress and select Ask A Librarian and tellher you would like toknow where copies of the Microfilms would be ,besides Minn, and USD. I found the following at ancestry's Genealogy forum(forgot what they call it). Very Informative. boards.msn.ancestry.com/surnames.taliaferro/327.1.1.1.1/mb.ashxhere is informatinon Warren Woodbury: genforum.genealogy.com/woodbury/messages/644.html___Update: Warren woodbury was illiterate, so any communications he may have written were actually written by his wife who had been educated at the Mission School at lake Harriet. mary's application for the lake Pepin landscrips were prepared for her and her family were made by maj. Lawrence taliaferro, her father. No one knows for sure if Maj. Taliafrro saw his daughter Mary again when he and his second wife returned to Minnesota in 1860. he did maintain communication with her upt til before his death in 1870.

I would highly recommend looking at the Microfilms of Major Lawrence Taliaferro's documents. They may include his correspondence with Mary , his daughter by the Sun Sets, d/o chief Cloudman. He died in 1870, which may indicate where she was living .

One of the sources i posted above, says that she stayed with her father and his legal wife for a while after he returned from Pennsylvania with his wife.i know he later arranged for her to live with one of the missionaries and his family, but I am sorry I don't know which one.
i had another thought, I wonder if Mary may have been at Fort Snelling when her hubby Warren joined the Army for the civil War. I believe he was killed in 1863 or 1864. I wonder if she stayed in St. Paul after he was killed and later came to Santee in 1885. You may try finding the 1875 Minnesota State Census(not the US Census)and see if she is on it. _______ Update: I did find her listed with Nancy, her daughter hannah and her kids, in the 1885 Minnesota state census.they were living in st. Paul,MN. she with her son Warren,Jr. and nancy left Minn. for Santee @1887 or so.

hermin1, she is still in St. Paul in 1880. She's not at Santee in 1885 but she is there by 1890.
