Hi my name is Penichon. I was wondering if you might could help me by telling me about the name. Is it French or Indian? If it's Indian what does it stand for and what tribe is it from? I was told by my grandmother, who's name is also Penichon, that it meant ''little dove'', is that true?

I believe the name is french.the word for little in french is ette,i don't know what dove is in french thouges on Chief penichh. it is not a Dakota Sioux word. It is Sioux. ____________________________ correction: i apologize for the wrong information I gave above. The name was givEn to the french trader,Leguire, by Wabasha's tribe.I lookedd for the translation of the word in the Dakota-english dictionary I have, but could not find anything. In one of my referencss,is reference to the the Indians giving him the name, and saying it meant dauntless, but in other references, in reference to TOhocokipeshnI, THE TRANSLATION OFR THIS NAME MEANS "hE wHO fEARS nOTHING". So you take yyour pick on which translation you prefer.

utzeron: where did you get the information re. Susan Pennichon Graham? when was her father killed by those Indians? ______ Okay, now I think I understand. it was Jean (correction, it was Antoine)Pennichon the French trader who married a daughter of chief Wabasha.it was her sister 's husband that was killed, and so she adopted her niece as her own daughter(susan Pennichon) ? We have no information on the sister who married charles Jacques Frenier, unfortunately. but there is i believe a tree of the Freniers on our website either in Family Trees or "To ask for Help On A person. there may be information on Oyate web site also re. the Freniers. ______________ chief pennishon(sp.) had the following daughters: the one who married Chas. Jacques Frenier Tahanpawastwin(Mary St. Clair) who married Old Betsy's brother Lightning Maker Ellen Pinichon Faribault(aka Big Yellow woman). Ref. Old Betsy, the Life and Times of A Famous Dakota Woman and Her Family. Mark Diedrich.Prairie Smoke Press.1996, and 2006 or 2007.

In regards to the information above, Mary Pinichon/Faribault* St. Clair (Woman Who Wears Good Moccasins) married Old Betsy's SON, Job St. Clair (Lightning Maker/Wakandikaga) versus Old Betsy's brother as transcribed.
*Mary St. Clair's sister, Ellen Pinichon Faribault, lived with and worked for Alexander Faribault's family (and his son's Richard's family) for over 10 years, which reasons why the sisters are also associated with the Faribault name. Alexander Faribault was married to Elizabeth Pinichon Graham. Elizabeth's mother was Suzanne Pinichon (also mixed-blood) and her brother was Dautless/Fears Nothing/Poni Shue fils Pinichon according to various sources. He is also the father of Ellen and Mary. So basically, Ellen lived and worked for her cousin, Mary Elizabeth Pinichon Graham and her husband, Alex Faribault.

Elizabeth Jeffries, Ellen thingyhon & Mrs.(Jacob St. Clair) Wankandekaga(Mary thingyhon). Affidavit by telegram stating Elizabeth Jeffries was sister to Ellen Otherday. This may help in doing research on these four sisters.

Auto correct added to the above post...check a copy of the Elrod Roll, you can read it. If a desendant it at least tells you they were sisters. All four sisters are listed also on the two Mdewakanton annuity rolls, 1883 & 1885.
