that mystery word, in my photoshop comes out as achank(or h)'od(or o)manwi. anyhoo, she (rosalie) had a mother.the il I stilll think is short for illegitmate. Otherwise the priest would have written after rosalie, born" of the legitimate marriage of ......." Or Louis married the woman by indian custom which might explain the (il)?

The name of Rosalie's mother is indeed Cankumaniwin. The c is pronounced as 'ch" as in cheek. The priest wrote it as he heard it pronounced.

Am looking for more information on the parents of a Rosalie Martin born 1843. Would have been 1/2 Sioux. Believe that her parents were Louis Martin born 11 Feb 1803, died 15 apr 1858. Her mother is where I am uncertain. I have both a Zoe Winona and a Cankuomaniwin. I believe she was a Mdewakanton from a village in or around Mendota Minnesota. Appreciate any help. Rosalie would be my great great grandmother.

Cankuomaniwin, Keeps the Path Woman is correct, b. Abt. 1810 Kapoja, d. 1848 Cloudman"s Village. Daughter of Etarzepah L'Arc & ? Wabasha, sister of James Jim Wabasha. Louis Martin farmer agent at Cloudman's Village when Cankuomaniwin died. Rosalie married Louis Cloutier. One sister, I think Mary, died in the St. Paul hotel fire while working there, she was married to Louis Forcier. Brother Louis was at Lower Sioux during the outbreak, he was married to Mary Renville. Mary Rose married Louis Marlow, Angelique married Hilaire Bailargeon, Julie married Fracois Gamelle, Agnes married Preque Felix, Joseph & Henri died young. Henry Sibley Mdewakanton debt books, MHS original, lists Louis Martin's brother in law & his debt, 1834 or 1835. Cankuomaniwin was the granddaughter of Chief Wabasha Necohunda One Eye who lost an eye in an accident when he was young.
