sharonz09: I looked up the name in the dakota dictionary online: O means blue. waci means to dance. i have a James Crow aka Lightning and wife Susan Lightning aka Winona. They had a daughter Mary. james Crow aka lightning later married toa woman namedhelen Spotted Wood march17, 1907 the word Ponca is also notedon this record.(Ref. Santee mar. Reg.) i also have james . Lightning listed in the 1920 US Census for santee,Knox, NE at age 60, with his daughter mary L. daughter age 26, gr. dau. mary Z. aged 12 and gr. son Paul age 4/12. the children were born in So. Dakota, as was their father.
i found a burial: Sophie W. Lightning born:N/A and died 18 Dec. 1912., at Howe Creek Cenetery, Knox, NE. ___________________ I have a Susan Lightning parents: Tateyuhadan, and Owaci(dead) Susan was first married to frank Johnson-dec'd they had a son George W. Johnson who is onthe 1902 Santee Register of Indian Fam. at age 21 yrs. Then she married James Lightning aka John Crow. given this information, it would appear that your Susan or Sophie was a half-sibling of William Walker, and Louisa Mazawastewin( translates to good iron Woman). In the Santee land allotments of 1869, which were given out in 1872, Lousia Walker was listed as one of the allotees, with a notation that she returned to MInnesota. i was unable to find anything on her at ancestry.com Louisa does not appear in the 1880 US Census for Maiden Rock, Pierce, wisconsin, where Jacob and his brother John Walker were living in the same household with their families. . I was also unable to find any Census Recordfor Santee prior to 1884 that lists her as a daughter of Jacob Walker and Owaci.using the her age given in the aforementioned land allotment records.

Could Owaci be a sibling to the Ninse that married AJ Campbell? Her father was also Hihutina. I have been trying to find out any information that I can on this. Could you provide me with more information on Owaci's family or is this everything?

Hockeyshadow, the only thing that i have of my gr. gr. grandmother is that she is the mother to Sophia Crow Lightning, Susan Lightning on her baptismal which has Owaci and Tateyuhamni as her parents and that Owaci is on the list in 1857 under Wakute's band of mdewakanton's, I have you seen that? I haven't heard of Ninse who is that?

sharon09 : thanks so much for your help. allegedly , th eoly thing I have been told is that this Ninsewas a spouse of either Archibald Campbell Sr. or his son Archibald John Cox Campbell. Peacekeeper at Oyate may be able to help you with the Campbells. I consider her an expert on this family as sheis a descendent.
correction the son of Archibald John Campbell should be Archibald John colin Campbell. Pleas excuse my goof.

sharonz9 and hockeyshadow: I couldn't find Hihutina in the1849 and 1850 censu done by Rev. Aitkin at the Redwood Mission.(minn. Geneal. Journ.). I am thinking that he musthavebeen part of another band prior to 1857. I wonder if the NARA has any Census/Annuity records forthe bands prior to 1857? It is worth checking out. I have been unable to find out the Dakota name of the Sarah listed as the spouse of Jacob Walker in that 1880 census I mentioned earlier. Darn. The other snagis that jacob must have married his wives by Ind. custom, for which there won't be any records. Do either of you have Jacob Walker's Heirshiip papers? these may help us to solve this puzzle. Since he died in Minnesota, the BIA offices there should have a record of his probate. You should writw to them and ask for a copy. Mke sure you show how you are related. The offices do not respond to calls.
