hockeyshadow: that is a great find!!!!! You have no idea how many hours I spentlooking for something,...anything on Ninse. all I was able to find was a brief note from Archibald ,referring to Ninse, where he wrote to someone that" my Indian woman died last September at laprairie(September 1801)(MHS-WJC)the reference is from the Minn. Hist. Soc. in a book by John Wozniak,. He was a christian Brother-teacher at St. Mary's , Winona Minn. Back @ 1972 or 1973, I went with a youth group for a basketball tournament at Winona, MN. there is a Catholic convent there, but I don't remember the name of it, it may have been St. Mary's. I agree with you that she very well, may have been the daughter either Little Crow theI or Little Crow II.

sharon09 I know I saw the reference to this somewhere, either on Oyate o web site or this web site, or in oneof my other files, which is why I wrote the information on her file card. I would not have done so otherwise. but darn it!! I forgot to write in the reference I got it from . That is what is driving me up the wall.

sharon09 Hopefully, Jimmy at Oyate, can find the baptismal record you asked him to find on William Walker so we will know if he and sophia Lightning were full siblings or half siblings.
_________________________----- I was unable to find his baptismal record in the Santee Mission Baptismal Register 184"-1904 or 06. Darn!!!.
I can only conclude that if he was baptized at Santee before 1870,I don't think we will be able to find his record, because a tornado ripped thorugh Santee @ 1870 and destroyed the records and the mission. In any case, we already know from Sophia's baptismal record that she and William were not full brother and sister.

sharon09: you will need to send me your family tree starting with your parents and working back.that should help me to help you. As it stands, it appears that jacob and owaci had a daughter Louisa good or pretty Star woman, who married Willis Walker. Owaci and Tateyuhomni had a daughter Sophia Lightning aka winona. Jacob and possibly Owaci had a son William Walker. Owaci was not the Sarah listed on the 1880 uS Census for Maiden Rock,Pierce WI. And I am still trying to find the reference for Owaci being the daughter of Hihutina. Either you don't know who your ancestors are , or you may be tying to create a link where there is none.and if it is the latter, I can't help you.

In any case, we already know from Sophia's baptismal record that she and William were not full brother and sister. ____ correction: We know who her parents were. All I know for sure is that William's father was Jacob Walker. on that copyof thefamilies at Santee. The date on the families listeed in the book 1 of the Santee Agency registers is the 1885 SanteeCensus. if my hunch isright, I believe you may be trying to make a connectionof Sophia lightning being the wife of Joseph Moose and later thomas Walker. What you need is amarrriage record for sophia and Joseph Moose. I don't know where or if you will be able to findit,. If they married by Ind. Custom, the only record of it will be in her probate/Heirship papers ,and in Joseph Moose's heirship papers-that is-if hehad a land allotment in Minnesota or at Ssantee. based on Sophia's baptismal record, she was already Mrs. Joseph Moose. Sophia Moose died Oct. 29, 1921.

"What you need is a marrriage record for Sophia and Joseph Moose." Hermin, when and where were they likely married? I can help you find this record if they married in NE by ceremony after about 1880.

vicky re. Sophia Moose. i amt hinking that they may have gotten married in Minn. sophia Moose is listed in the Santee Mission Baptismal Register 184? to 1904 or 6? s being born in1850 at Redwood Falls, MN. she was baptized atWabashaw,MN in1879. she died oct 29, 1921. I am guessing that she may have gotten married at Wabashaw, Minn. @ 1879 to Joseph Moose, or they may have gotten married at Santee reservation. but i wouldn't think she would have been allowed to marry by ceremony at Santee back then, without being baptized and/or confirmed first. I would say look for a cermonial marriage for her and Joseph at both Santee and in Minn. between 1970 to 1979. I appreciate your help very much, Vicky.

The Knox County marriage records for Native folks don't start until about 1880. There are records for white folks there as early as 1857. It has always been my "guess" that they didn't require a formal license until they begin appearing around 1880, or they simply weren't recorded before that time. There won't be a marriage record for them before that. I don't have access to MN records, sorry to say. :-(

One of my references notes that Sophia Moose was living in Wabashaw,Minn in 1880 ( Ref. Dakota Identity In Minnesota 1825-1995. Caroline A. Anderson. Indiana University) You might want to check the 1880 US census for the city and the county.
